Zelenskyy Heads to White House for High-Stakes Talks on Ending Ukraine War.
Zelenskyy to Visit Washington for Trump Talks After Putin Summit Yields No Ceasefire.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced he will travel to Washington, D.C., on Monday to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump after Trump’s high-profile summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska failed to deliver a ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
“On Monday, I will meet with President Trump in Washington, D.C., to discuss all of the details regarding ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation,” Zelenskyy said in a statement on X.
The Putin-Trump meeting ended with no ceasefire agreement, as Putin made it clear that Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine would continue. A photo from the summit showed Putin smiling confidently as he shook Trump’s hand, while Trump appeared more reserved.
Following the Alaska summit, Trump spoke to Zelenskyy in a call lasting more than 90 minutes, later joined by European and NATO officials. According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine continues to stress the importance of a trilateral meeting with Russia and the U.S. as the only way to secure a lasting peace deal.
Trump previously hinted that such a trilateral summit could take place if his talks with Putin showed progress.
“Ukraine emphasises that key issues can be discussed at the level of leaders, and a trilateral format is suitable for this,” Zelenskyy wrote. He also underscored the need for security guarantees from the U.S. and allies to deter any future Russian aggression.
Zelenskyy added that his discussions with Trump included “positive signals” from Washington about supporting security guarantees for Kyiv, a critical component in any eventual peace agreement.
