Democrats Launch Effort to End Trump’s Federalization of DC Police, But Bill Faces Uphill Battle..
Democrats have introduced a joint resolution to end President Donald Trump’s federalization of Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department, a move they say undermines local governance.
The measure is unlikely to advance in the House, where Republicans hold the majority. In the Senate, Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen plans to introduce companion legislation, though its prospects remain slim in the GOP-controlled chamber.
“Trump’s current takeover is an abuse of power and nothing more than a raw power grab. It is a direct attack on the ability of the people of the District of Columbia to govern their own affairs,” Van Hollen said in a statement.
